Grodno is a very large city with many soviet style block buildings, but these 18th century buildings had a style and grace that reminded me of 18th century French or American architecture. As one of 5 important regional centres in the Russian Empire, Grodno was apparently a centre for culture and these buildings housed rehearsal space and living quarters for the ballet troupe who performed in a nearby theatre. Quite a contrast with the nearby Soviet-era square with one of the ubiquitous Lenin statues.
